MSU Students

If you need to take a proctored exam, please note the following:

Exam types

  • Exams for an MSU class
  • Exams for classes at other institutions

Fees

  • $20 fee to take an MSU or non-MSU exam
    • Covers a 4-hour exam period
    • If five or more exams are taken during the semester, one exam fee will be waived
    • If an exam needs to be mailed to another institution, you or the receiving institution are responsible for postage fees.
  • Fees paid by academic unit for students with an approved Alternative Test Site exam accommodation. Find information on requesting exam accommodations.

Scheduling & Appointments

  • Schedule your exam appointment(s) as far in advance as possible.
  • Email testingcenter@msu.edu or call (517) 355-8385 to schedule your appointment.
  • Be sure to provide your professor the Testing Center contact information, so they can provide exam materials via mail or email.
  • MSU students must present a student ID when arriving for appointments.

Exams outside of MSU

Non-MSU Students

If you are not an MSU student, but need to take a proctored exam, you may do so in our office. Please note the following:

  • There is a $30 fee for each exam you take in our office.
  • Examinees are required to pay any additional shipping fees, if applicable.
  • If you are taking five or more exams in our office during a semester, we will waive the fee for one of your exams.
  • You can schedule an appointment by e-mailing us at testingcenter@msu.edu or calling us at 517-355-8385.  We suggest that you schedule your appointment(s) as far in advance as possible.
  • Once you’ve decided that you want to take a test here, you’ll need to give our contact information to your home institution so that they can send us your test (either via regular mail or e-mail).
  • If your exam needs to be mailed back to another institution, either you or that institution will be responsible for paying postage fees.  Please plan accordingly.

Info for Faculty and Program Coordinators

Large Classroom Test Proctoring

The MSU Testing Center is able to provide different types of services to MSU faculty and program coordinators.  We have a large pool of proctors on staff that may be available to proctor large classes in lecture halls, as well as accommodated testing sessions.  In these instances, our proctors come to you.  The presence of our proctors in your classroom or lecture hall is one of the best ways to preserve academic integrity during examinations.  There are fees associated with this service, and we’ll need to have your exam schedule far in advance of the test dates.  Please contact us for details.

Cancellation Policy:

If a professor and/or department representative would like to cancel proctoring services for a particular exam date, we require 24-hours written notice.  In the absence of this notice, departments will be charged at the full rate for the services that were originally scheduled.

Fully Staffed & Secure Computer Lab

In addition to large classroom proctoring, we also have the ability to administer up to 17 computer-based exams at one time in our office.  Multiple programs on campus currently take advantage of having a completely secure environment where computer-based exams can be administered and academic integrity can be preserved at all times.  We monitor students via camera, large windows, and frequent walkthroughs.  In most cases, fees are associated with using our space.  Please contact us if you have questions or would like to reserve space for your students.

Make-Up Exams/Distance & Online Course Exams

We are happy to administer exams for students who are taking in-class or online courses.  These are by appointment only, so the student must contact us to set up a test time.  There is a $20 fee per exam.  Once the student informs you that he/she is going to take his/her test in our office, you simply forward us the exam (or exam password) and we’ll administer the test in our secure environment at the appointed time.  If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact us.
